ABLS Live is a hands-on course designed to provide the how-to of emergency care of the burn patient through the first 24-hour critical time period. The program supports emergency and mass casualty preparedness focusing on triage, burn survivability, patient transportation, and patient treatment. ABLS is relevant to a wide range of professionals who treat individuals with burn injuries including first responders, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and physicians. We recommend that participants have 6 months of field/patient care experience or recent similar experience. There will be a series of lectures and case studies presented for group discussion. Testing consists of a written exam and a practical assessment. Upon successful completion, all providers will receive a certificate of completion (renewable after 4 years). Physicians and nurses are also eligible for continuing education credit.

Objectives Evaluate a patient with a serious burn. Define the magnitude and severity of the injury. Identify and establish priorities of treatment. Manage the airway and support ventilation. Initiate and monitor fluid resuscitation. Apply correct methods of physiological monitoring. Determine which patients should be transferred to a burn center. Organize and conduct the inter-hospital transfer of a seriously injured burn patient. Disaster management.

ABLS LIVE Course American Burn Association is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Centers Commission (ANCC) on Accreditation. The ABA designates this continuing education activity for 7.0 continuing education credit hours.

The American Burn Association is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The American Burn Association designates this educational activity for 7.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s). Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
