Course Description: This workshop is taught by AWHONN approved Instructor Trainers. The workshop prepares participants to teach the Intermediate Fetal Monitoring Course. Content includes principles and application of adult learning theory as applicable for teaching the Intermediate Fetal Monitoring Course such as: integration of principles of adult learning into the didactic and skills course components, incorporate appropriate teaching methods and strategies during the lecture, demonstrate entry-level proficiency in teaching and guiding participants during the skill stations, and demonstrate knowledge of the assigned components of the course during the micro-teach. Information about the administrative and operational aspects of FHM are presented. This course is the initial step for individuals who wish to become approved AWHONN FHM Program Instructors.

Course Objectives: Apply adult learning/teaching principles to the Intermediate Fetal Monitoring Course. Demonstrate entry-level proficiency in teaching selected segments of the Intermediate Fetal Heart Monitoring Course (lecture and skill stations). Manage classroom issues and formulate problem-solving techniques. Identify administrative responsibilities, policies, and procedures of the Intermediate Fetal Monitoring Course. Navigate the AWHONN website to perform administrative functions.
Course Format: One hour of online pre-work to be completed more than 48 hours prior to the day of class. 4-hours of an instructor-led, in-person course.
Continuing Education Credits: The maximum number of nursing contact hours that can be earned for this Nursing Continuing Professional Development (NCPD) activity is 6 nursing contact hours. To obtain the nursing contact hours for this NCPD activity, you must participate in the entire educational activity and complete a participant feedback form by the expiration date. AWHONN is approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider #CEP580.

Prerequisite Education must be completed more than 48 hours prior to the course. If not successfully completed, students are denied access to enter the online prerequisite platform and will not be allowed to entry to the in-person course. Portal opens 30 days prior to the course for participants to register their student materials and complete the prerequisites. Participants sign into the AWHONN Online Course Process Center with their Student Materials ID, AWHONN Course ID, and Instructor ID at https://ce.awhonn.pesgce.com/ .
To be eligible to attend an Intermediate Instructor Course participants must:
Be an AWHONN full member
Maintain active licensure as a registered nurse or physician
Have a minimum of two years of recent experience in fetal monitoring
Have current clinical involvement in fetal monitoring (FHM) as a staff nurse, physician, manager, clinical nurse specialist, advanced practice registered nurse, certified midwife (registered midwife in Canada), or educator that includes responsibilities for assessment of EFM clinical skills of others
Maintain professional development in intrapartum, antepartum, high-risk care, and FHM through attendance at relevant continuing education activities
Successfully complete the current edition Intermediate Fetal Monitoring Course within three years of the Intermediate Instructor Course
Complete an Intermediate FHM teach-back Course
Complete the Conflict of Interest, Licensing Agreement, and Financial Declaration Statements annually.
